Women Can Also Lead - Salawu

The NYSC Osun State Gender Desk Officer, Mrs. Salawu Kehinde has stressed that females should be given their rightful place in the society. She stated that there is nothing a male child can do that a female child cannot do.

Speaking on Education and Gender, Alhaja Salawu decried the poor and mostly lack of equal educational opportunities for the females in some parts of Nigeria. She said that training the girl-child was a very important investment in human capacity development.
Furthermore, she admonished the members to encourage parents in their host communities and immediate environment to educate both their male and female children.
Speaking on the Gender gap between the males and females in politics and economy, Salawu said women over the years have been greatly marginalised and urged that women should be encouraged to participate in Politics. She pointed out that the economy of our nation is basically controlled by men, while women are assigned the domestic and subservient duties. She noted with dismay, that the burden of home economy in the rural areas are laid heavily on the females. For instance, it is usually the females that carry out farm works to support the family economy. Mrs Salawu said this ought not to be so. 

In terms of politics, the said women should be encouraged to participate in politics and governance. According to her, this was the only way that the 35% gender equality in politics could be achieved. She said that women involvement in politics was no promiscuity as purported in some quarters.

Furthermore, she said that childbearing post death threat to women. Therefore, childbirth should be controlled to reduce the risk of maternal mortality.

On sexual harassment, she said that both men and women are usually harassed. Therefore, sexual harassment should be discouraged in all quarters.

The lecture ended with cards displaying expressions such as 'SAY NO TO STIGMATIZATION' , 'NO TO RAPE' , 'NO TO CHILD PROSTITUTION', among others held out to sensitise the audience.
